Social Media at Work – Policy or Permission?

There’s no going back. Employees now have access to everything social media in their pockets 24/7 – which includes when they are at work. Employers are finding themselves in a challenging position as they try to manage both employee productivity and the potential impact their employees’ social media activities have on their businesses. The quick answer is to create policies around social media use, but do they really work? Can you actually police every employee’s social media use every time they pull out their phone? Or perhaps more importantly, do you want to? Do you have measurable evidence that employee social media use is affecting their productivity? And if so, what can you do about it? Is there a happy medium? This workshop will look at the realities of social media in the workplace and how employers can minimize potentially negative impacts without adversely affecting productivity or morale.

Keynote Address - Beyond 140. How a Tweet Can Inspire Change
Twitter is the first place people go to find out what's happening and what people are talking about. It's the place to connect with people from all around the world and access great content - whether that's related to sports, politics, fashion, art or sneakers. As a marketer, understanding what people care about, what's trending and how to participate in it authentically, is more important today than ever before. Consumers are always on, always connected, and want interactions with brands to be more human and targeted towards them. Hear from Rory Capern, the managing director of Twitter Canada, on how companies can connect with their consumers authentically and meaningfully and his thoughts on the future of digital marketing in 2017 and beyond. Impact of Executive Coaching on Tech Students
Impact of Executive Coaching on Tech Students
The idea of Executive Coaching has been embraced by leaders in boardrooms across the globe - From Wall Street to the Square Mile Financial District of London, Bay Street in Toronto and in Financial centers across the world – business leaders make use of Executive Coaches to help them pinpoint and refine their behaviours to enhance their success.
I would love to talk about the impact of bringing an Executive Coach from Canada’s Financial District into the classroom and how students have embraced this One-on-One approach that helps them focus on their high-impact behaviours to achieve academic and personal success. As our next generation prepares to enter the workforce – how are we preparing them with the self-directed mindset in order to be successful in this ever changing and highly competitive world?
I plan on sharing my own journey as well… as someone who worked successfully to stage an Olympics Games in Vancouver to working with several of Canada’s largest Financial Intuitions – how I had to redefine personal success after a cancer diagnosis. My own definition of success changed one day as I was in the hospital lying on a cold examination table – and the doctor brought in a class of medical students to be there during my treatment and tests that day. I watched that senior doctor – not tell or give the students any answers – but instead she asked the students Socratic-like questions to allow the medical students to help diagnosis and treat my cancer. That senior doctor’s approach with her students was the same approach I had taken with my senior leaders -> not telling but coaching the business leader to self-discover the answers. That’s when I knew I could bring my skills as an Executive Coach into a classroom.
To be successful in this world – we cannot just be giving students all the answers – we need to coach them to have the right mindset and ask the right questions in order to help take them and all of us to the next level of success and be competitive.

Echo Chamber or Engaged Public: A Case Study of Social Issues on Instagram
Social media has been an effective tool for people who want to call attention to social issues in their communities. In fact, many groups have leveraged the power of social to attract the attention of traditional or mainstream media sources and thus create a groundswell of momentum for their cause (examples include #IdleNoMore, #ArabSpring and the Occupy movement, among others).

However, as social media matures, and more people attempt to use platforms to reach their audience, we are seeing changes in the way communities engage on social. This presentation will look at some of these changes. Using #ClimateChange as a case study of an important social issue, we will look at networked communities on Instagram to see the ways people use hashtags to create communities of shared interest. We will see how these hashtags inadvertently end up dividing communities that should be working together for a common goal, and we will discuss strategies for bridging the divide between communities that are speaking the same language but still remain worlds apart.

In a world where corporations are feverishly working to create better brand knowledge and awareness, apply new tools and techniques to communicate with their audiences; social media has become the front line, the new ‘war room’ for communicators.

It's an arms race out there!

Threats like phishing, hacking and DDOS have been around for ages. The new era of cyber threats are far worse. Heard of Crypto?

How can we avoid these? Who's behind them? What do we do when we are attacked? How should this change how we use social media? What are the best practices for sharing content and avoid potential threats (or the illusion of potential threats).

This panel will examine all this, and take your questions.

Ethical Online Marketing
Every person entering the online marketing space has a decision to make. Am I going to practice ethical online marketing? Am I going to make as much money as will be possible regardless of the ethics involved?

Unfortunately, much of the training and techniques taught by online marketing coaches lives in the gray space between these two standards.

Join Steve Dotto to explore some of the most powerful unethical practices currently in vogue in the online space.

Steve will dissect the practices, explore the motivations and the triggers that make them work.

Then we can take those same practices, and learn to apply them in an ethical setting. These techniques work, that is the reason that they're so popular. Understanding why they work and how they work will give you the knowledge you need to better serve your business and audience.

The Positive Impact of Social Media: Everett's Story
Once upon a time there was a little redheaded boy with autism named Everett. He was a precocious child who didn't eat many foods. His parents loved him very much and worried that he would not grow up big and strong. One day, that boy found a new food he wanted to eat and the parents rejoiced! But soon the parents were not able to find the food in any stores within their shire. So the brave father sent a message to his friends and relatives to seek out this rare food. These people then sent the message on to more people who then sent it on to more. Soon the plight of the family was on a thousand birds' wings to the furthest reaches of the seven kingdoms. People from far and wide, including the Captain of Kirk himself, heeded the family's call and flooded their cupboards with the food. The family was full, both in heart and belly, from the generosity of the people of the land. And they lived happily ever after.
